Indicated for: psoriasis; inflammatory dermatoses
Route of administration: cutaneous
Substance: betamethasone + salicylic acid (glucocorticoid + keratolytic)
ATC: D07XC01 (Dermatologicals | Corticosteroids, other combinations | Corticosteroids, potent, other combinations)
The combination of betamethasone and salicylic acid is used to treat inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and other chronic dermatoses. Betamethasone is a potent corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, itching, and redness, while salicylic acid acts as a keratolytic agent, helping to remove thickened or scaly skin and enhancing the penetration of the corticosteroid.
This combination is available as an ointment or lotion and is applied topically to the affected area, usually once or twice daily, as directed by a doctor. It is important to avoid applying it to broken skin, the face, or sensitive areas unless specifically advised by a doctor.
Side effects may include local irritation, burning sensation, dryness, or, in rare cases, skin thinning and stretch marks, especially with prolonged use. Excessive or long-term use may lead to systemic absorption of the corticosteroid, potentially causing systemic side effects.
This combination is contraindicated in untreated skin infections, hypersensitivity to any of the components, and should be used with caution during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Patients must strictly follow their doctor’s instructions to avoid adverse effects.
