Trihexyphenidyl is an anticholinergic medication primarily used to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease and drug-induced extrapyramidal disorders. It is effective in reducing muscle rigidity, tremors, and other motor symptoms associated with these conditions.
Trihexyphenidyl is often used as an adjunct therapy in combination with other antiparkinsonian drugs, such as levodopa, to improve symptom control. It may also be prescribed to manage acute or tardive dystonias caused by antipsychotic medications.
Common side effects include dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, and dizziness. At higher doses, it may cause confusion, hallucinations, or other psychotic symptoms, particularly in elderly patients. The dosage should be gradually adjusted to minimize the risk of adverse effects.
Trihexyphenidyl should be used with caution in patients with glaucoma, prostate enlargement, or other conditions that may be worsened by its anticholinergic effects.
