Chamomile extract, from Matricaria recutita, is a herbal product traditionally used for minor digestive complaints such as bloating and mild spasms, for irritation of the mouth and throat, or to soothe the skin, depending on the product form. It has emollient, mild anti-inflammatory and local soothing properties.

It may be taken by mouth as tea, drops or extract, or used locally as solutions, creams, baths or gargles, according to the leaflet. The route of use matters: a skin product should not be swallowed, and tea does not replace medical treatment. For gargles or local application, avoid swallowing large amounts unless the product is intended for ingestion.

Side effects may include nausea, local irritation, itching, rash or allergic reactions. People allergic to plants in the Asteraceae family, such as ragweed, marigold, yarrow or chrysanthemums, have a higher risk of reactions. Application to the eyes, infected wounds or extensive lesions should be avoided unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Seek medical help if facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, worsening irritation, fever, pus-like discharge or persistent digestive symptoms occur. During pregnancy, breastfeeding and in young children, use should be chosen carefully according to the product. Chamomile may help minor symptoms, but it does not replace a proper diagnosis.
