Leaflet ROCALTROL 0.50mcg soft capsules

Indicated for: vitamin D deficiency; calcium metabolism disorders

Route of administration: oral

Substance: calcitriol (vitamin D / vitamin D analogue)

ATC: A11CC04 (Alimentary tract and metabolism | Vitamin A and D, including combinations of the two | Vitamin D and analogues)

Calcitriol is the active form of vitamin D3 and is used to treat hypocalcemia (low calcium levels in the blood) and other conditions associated with abnormal calcium and phosphorus metabolism. It is primarily indicated for patients with hypoparathyroidism, chronic kidney failure, or hypophosphatemic rickets. Calcitriol helps increase calcium and phosphorus absorption from the intestines, mobilize calcium from bones, and reduce renal calcium excretion.

Calcitriol is used to prevent and treat hypocalcemia in patients with chronic kidney failure undergoing dialysis, as well as in those with hypoparathyroidism or pseudohypoparathyroidism. It is also used in the treatment of renal osteodystrophy and vitamin D-resistant rickets.

Common side effects include hypercalcemia (elevated calcium levels in the blood), which can cause nausea, vomiting, constipation, excessive thirst, frequent urination, and fatigue. In severe cases, hypercalcemia can lead to soft tissue calcifications or kidney dysfunction. Regular monitoring of calcium, phosphorus, and kidney function is essential during treatment.

Calcitriol should be taken as directed by a doctor, and the dose is adjusted based on blood calcium and phosphorus levels. Patients should avoid calcium or vitamin D supplements unless recommended by their doctor to prevent hypercalcemia.
