Rifamycin is an antibiotic from the rifamycin class, primarily used to treat bacterial intestinal infections, such as traveler’s diarrhea caused by bacteria like Escherichia coli. It works locally in the intestine by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis, leading to bacterial destruction.
One advantage of rifamycin is its minimal absorption into the bloodstream, which reduces the risk of systemic side effects. It is commonly used for mild to moderate bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract.
Rifamycin is generally well-tolerated but may cause side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, or bloating. Patients should follow the prescribed treatment and avoid stopping the medication before completing the full course.
