Polymyxin is an antibiotic active mainly against certain Gram-negative bacteria. Depending on the exact substance and product form, it may be used locally for skin, eye or ear infections, while systemic forms are reserved for severe hospital-treated infections. It has no effect on viruses and should not be used without a clear medical indication.
Administration depends on the product: drops, ointment, topical solution or, rarely, injectable treatment in a specialised setting. It is important to follow the recommended duration and not stop too early when a full course has been prescribed. Do not use leftover antibiotic for new infections and do not share the bottle or tube with other people.
Local side effects may include stinging, burning, redness, itching, rash or contact dermatitis. With systemic treatment, important risks are kidney injury and hearing or balance problems, dizziness, tingling or muscle weakness, which is why monitoring and carefully calculated doses are required. Any history of antibiotic allergy should be reported.
Contact a doctor if symptoms worsen, swelling, intense pain, decreased vision, heavy discharge, fever or lack of improvement occurs. During systemic treatment, report reduced urination, hearing changes, severe dizziness or breathing difficulty immediately. Correct use helps limit bacterial resistance and reduces the risk of avoidable side effects.
