Eucalyptus oil + rosemary + Peru balsam are aromatic ingredients used in some topical preparations for a blocked-nose sensation, mild colds, irritating cough or muscle discomfort. Their effect is mainly symptomatic: strong odour and warming sensation may make breathing feel easier or soothe the area, but they do not treat the underlying cause of infection.
The product is applied externally only, on intact skin, usually on the chest, back or painful area, according to the leaflet. It should not be placed inside the nose, mouth, eyes, on mucous membranes, wounds or under tight bandages. Wash hands after use. In children, the minimum permitted age depends on product and concentration, so the leaflet must be followed.
Side effects may include local irritation, redness, burning sensation, itching, contact dermatitis or allergy to fragrances and Peru balsam. Vapours may irritate the airways in some people. Caution is advised in patients with asthma, bronchospasm, epilepsy, sensitive skin or previous allergic reactions to essential oils. Avoid heat pads unless the leaflet allows it.
Stop use and seek medical advice if wheezing, breathing difficulty, widespread rash, blisters, facial swelling or severe irritation occurs. If accidentally swallowed, especially by a child, urgent medical advice is needed. If fever, cough or congestion persists, worsens, or chest pain develops, medical assessment is necessary rather than relying only on topical aromatic products.
