Indicated for: prevention of pneumococcal disease
Route of administration: injectable
Substance: polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine (vaccine)
ATC: J07AL01 (Antiinfectives for systemic use | Bacterial vaccines | Pneumococcal vaccines)
The pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) is used to prevent infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, including pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia. The vaccine contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 different serotypes of the bacterium, which stimulate the immune system to produce specific antibodies against them.
The vaccine is administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously, usually in a single dose, and is recommended for adults over 65 years of age, individuals with chronic illnesses, or those with weakened immune systems.
Common side effects include pain at the injection site, mild fever, and fatigue. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions may occur.
The pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine is an important preventive measure for reducing the incidence and severity of pneumococcal infections, helping to protect vulnerable populations.
