Indicated for: bowel preparation for procedures
Route of administration: oral
Substance: macrogol + electrolytes + ascorbic acid (osmotic laxative with electrolytes and vitamin C)
ATC: A06AD65 (Alimentary tract and metabolism | Drugs for constipation | Osmotically acting laxatives)
This medicine may change blood electrolyte levels.
Macrogol + electrolytes + ascorbic acid is a combination used mainly for bowel cleansing before colonoscopy or other investigations, depending on the product. Macrogol holds water in the bowel and evacuates intestinal contents, electrolytes help maintain salt balance, and ascorbic acid contributes to the osmotic laxative effect.
It is taken by mouth as a solution prepared from powder, exactly according to the schedule given by the doctor or leaflet. Drinking the required clear fluids and following the timing instructions are important. Incorrect preparation, insufficient fluid intake or not following the recommended diet may compromise the examination and increase side effects.
Common side effects include nausea, bloating, abdominal cramps, fullness, vomiting, anal irritation, chills or headache. Diarrhoea is the intended effect, but it can lead to dehydration or electrolyte imbalance, especially in older or frail patients and in people with heart disease, kidney disease or diuretic treatment.
Contact a doctor if persistent vomiting, severe dizziness, fainting, confusion, palpitations, intense abdominal pain, no bowel movements after use or blood in the stool occurs. Tell the doctor if you have heart failure, kidney disease, bowel obstruction, severe colitis, swallowing problems or aspiration risk. Other medicines may need to be separated from the bowel preparation.
