Natamycin + neomycin + hydrocortisone is a local combination used in some products for infections and inflammation of the outer ear or skin when susceptible fungi and bacteria are suspected. Natamycin is an antifungal, neomycin is an antibiotic, and hydrocortisone reduces redness, swelling, itching and inflammatory pain.
It should be used only on the body area for which the product is authorised, according to the leaflet and doctor’s advice. If it is an ear product, it should not be used when the eardrum is perforated or ear tubes are present unless the doctor decides. Do not touch the dropper tip to skin or ear, and do not prolong treatment without review.
Side effects may include stinging, burning, itching, irritation, a blocked-ear feeling, rash or allergy to neomycin. The corticosteroid can mask worsening infection if treatment is unsuitable. Long use may promote superinfection, persistent irritation or allergic sensitisation. In the ear, intense pain requires attention.
Contact a doctor if severe pain, fever, dizziness, reduced hearing, purulent or bloody discharge, swelling, widespread rash or lack of improvement after a few days occurs. Tell the doctor if you have eardrum perforation, ear surgery, allergy to aminoglycosides, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Correct treatment depends on proper diagnosis.
