Substance: porfimer (photosensitizing agent)

ATC: L01XD01 (Antineoplastic and immunomodulating agents | Other antineoplastic agents | Sensitizers used in photodynamic/radiation therapy)

Porfimer is a medication used in photodynamic therapy for the treatment of certain types of cancer, such as esophageal cancer or non-small cell lung cancer.
It is a photosensitizing agent that, when activated by a specific light source, produces reactive oxygen species that destroy tumor cells.

Porfimer is administered intravenously, and after a period of accumulation in tumor tissues, the affected area is exposed to laser light to activate the drug.
This therapy is minimally invasive and can be used as a primary treatment or as an adjunct in combination with other oncological therapies.

Common side effects include increased sensitivity to light, nausea, pain in the treated area, and local inflammation.
Patients must avoid exposure to direct sunlight or other strong light sources for at least 30 days after receiving porfimer.

It is essential for patients to strictly follow their doctor's instructions and report any unusual side effects.
Porfimer is not recommended for patients with porphyria or other conditions associated with photosensitivity.
