Asian ginseng + vitamins + minerals is a supplement combination used during periods of tiredness, convalescence, physical stress or insufficient dietary intake. Ginseng has traditional use for weakness and asthenia, while vitamins and minerals may help meet needs for metabolism, immunity, muscles, nerves and blood formation, depending on the formula.
It is taken by mouth according to the leaflet, preferably at the same time each day and without exceeding the dose. Do not combine it with other multimineral or multivitamin products without checking total doses. Minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc can reduce absorption of medicines including levothyroxine, antibiotics and bisphosphonates, so spacing may be needed.
Side effects may include nausea, constipation or diarrhoea, abdominal pain, metallic taste, insomnia, nervousness, palpitations or rash. Ginseng may interact with anticoagulants, diabetes medicines, stimulants and immunosuppressants. Mineral excess can be dangerous, especially iron in children, and fat-soluble vitamins can accumulate.
Ask for medical advice if you have diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, haemochromatosis, warfarin, immunosuppressive treatment, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Contact a doctor if palpitations, hypoglycaemia, severe constipation, vomiting, unusual bleeding or persistent fatigue occurs. The supplement does not replace diagnosis of a deficiency.
