Paracetamol + ascorbic acid + codeine is a combination for moderate pain and some cold symptoms, depending on the product. Paracetamol reduces pain and fever, vitamin C supplements intake, and codeine is a weak opioid that can relieve pain and cough. Use should be short and careful because codeine carries important risks.
It is taken by mouth according to the leaflet or doctor’s advice. Do not combine it with other products containing paracetamol, because overdose can cause severe liver injury. Avoid alcohol, sedatives, sleeping tablets and other opioids. Codeine may cause drowsiness and impair driving. It should not be used in children unless the product clearly allows it and a doctor recommends it.
Side effects may include nausea, constipation, sleepiness, dizziness, vomiting, sweating, itching or dry mouth. Codeine can cause dependence, tolerance and slow breathing, especially at high doses, in sensitive people or when combined with alcohol or sedatives. Some people convert codeine rapidly into morphine and may develop toxic reactions.
Seek urgent medical help in case of overdose, slow breathing, confusion, extreme sleepiness, blue lips, fainting or allergic reactions. Consult a doctor if pain or fever persists, cough worsens or purulent secretions appear. During pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver disease, breathing disorders, sleep apnoea or history of dependence, ask for medical advice before use.
