Papaverine hydrochloride is a medication used to relax smooth muscle and dilate blood vessels. It is commonly used to treat spasms of smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal, biliary, urinary, or vascular systems.

Papaverine works by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase, which increases the levels of cyclic AMP (adenosine monophosphate) in cells. This mechanism leads to smooth muscle relaxation and improved blood flow.

The medication is available in the form of tablets, injectable solutions, or suppositories and is used for conditions such as biliary colic, renal colic, vascular spasms (including cerebral angiospasm), or erectile dysfunction (in some cases).

Common side effects include nausea, dizziness, low blood pressure, drowsiness, or local reactions at the injection site. Rarely, allergic reactions, cardiac arrhythmias, or hepatotoxicity may occur.
