Mannitol is an osmotic diuretic primarily used to reduce intracranial and intraocular pressure. It is commonly used in emergency situations such as traumatic brain injuries or cerebral edema.

It works by increasing the excretion of water and electrolytes through the kidneys, thereby reducing fluid volume in the body. Mannitol is administered intravenously under medical supervision.

Side effects may include electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, or allergic reactions. It is important to monitor kidney function and electrolyte levels during treatment.

Mannitol is not recommended for patients with severe renal failure, severe dehydration, or active intracranial hemorrhage.
