Betaxolol is a beta-blocker medication primarily used for the treatment of high blood pressure and glaucoma. It works by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors, reducing heart rate and blood pressure, as well as intraocular pressure.

In ophthalmology, betaxolol is used as eye drops to lower intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, thereby preventing optic nerve damage.

In oral form, betaxolol is indicated for the treatment of hypertension and angina pectoris.

Side effects may include eye irritation (for eye drops), fatigue, dizziness, bradycardia (slow heart rate), or, rarely, breathing difficulties. It is contraindicated in patients with severe bradycardia, decompensated heart failure, or severe asthma.
