Norfloxacin is an antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone class, used to treat bacterial infections. It is effective against a broad spectrum of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It is indicated for the treatment of urinary tract infections (cystitis, pyelonephritis), gastrointestinal infections (such as bacterial diarrhea), and genital tract infections, including bacterial prostatitis.

It is taken orally, usually in tablet form, with the dosage and duration of treatment determined by the doctor based on the type and severity of the infection. Norfloxacin should be taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water to ensure optimal absorption.

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dizziness, and headaches. In rare cases, it may cause more serious reactions, such as tendinopathy (inflammation of tendons), tendon rupture, severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), or central nervous system disturbances (confusion, seizures).

Norfloxacin is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones, in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and in children under 18 years of age due to the risk of cartilage damage. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of tendon disorders or renal impairment.

It is essential for patients to strictly follow their doctor's instructions, complete the full course of treatment, and avoid excessive sun exposure while taking norfloxacin, as it may increase sensitivity to light.
