Nystatin is an antifungal medication used to treat infections caused by fungi of the Candida genus. It is effective in treating oral thrush (stomatitis), esophageal, cutaneous, and vaginal candidiasis. Nystatin works by binding to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, leading to membrane disruption and fungal cell death.

It is administered in various forms depending on the location of the infection:

- Oral suspension: for oral or esophageal candidiasis.
- Tablets or lozenges: for oral infections.
- Creams, ointments, or powders: for skin infections.
- Vaginal suppositories: for vaginal candidiasis.

Side effects are rare and usually mild. These may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or local irritation (in the case of topical application). Severe allergic reactions are very rare.

Nystatin is considered safe for use in children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers, but it should always be used under medical supervision. It is important for patients to complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms resolve, to prevent recurrence of the infection.
