Nicotinic acid, also known as niacin, is a B-complex vitamin (vitamin B3) used to treat dyslipidemia and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It helps lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL cholesterol.

It is commonly used in patients at high risk of cardiovascular diseases, especially when other medications are not tolerated or effective. Nicotinic acid is available in oral tablet form.

Side effects may include skin flushing, itching, nausea, or stomach discomfort. These reactions can be reduced by taking the medication after meals or using extended-release formulations.
