Etonogestrel is a synthetic progestin primarily used as a long-term contraceptive method. It is available as a subdermal implant (a small device placed under the skin) or as part of certain contraceptive vaginal rings. Etonogestrel prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus (thereby preventing sperm from reaching the egg), and thinning the endometrium, making it difficult for a fertilized egg to implant.

The subdermal etonogestrel implant is an extremely effective contraceptive method, providing protection for up to 3 years. It is a convenient option for women seeking a long-term, reversible contraceptive method that does not require daily administration. Etonogestrel is also used in some vaginal rings, which offer monthly contraceptive protection.

While etonogestrel is well-tolerated, it may cause some side effects. The most common include irregular menstrual bleeding, amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), headaches, weight gain, acne, or mood changes. In rare cases, more serious side effects, such as blood clots (thromboembolism) or allergic reactions, may occur. It is important for women to discuss their medical history with a doctor before using etonogestrel.

Etonogestrel should be used as directed by a doctor, and the subdermal implant must be inserted and removed by a qualified healthcare professional. It is contraindicated in women with a history of venous thromboembolism, severe liver disease, breast cancer, or unexplained vaginal bleeding. If severe side effects or unusual symptoms occur, immediate medical attention is necessary.
