Indicated for: pain and inflammation
Substance: tenoxicam (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug)
ATC: M01AC02 (Musculo-skeletal system | Antiinflammatory and antirheumatic products, non-steroids | Oxicams)
Tenoxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain and inflammation associated with musculoskeletal conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is also used for the relief of acute pain, such as postoperative pain or pain caused by injuries.
Tenoxicam works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins, substances involved in inflammation, pain, and fever. It is administered orally or by injection, usually once daily, due to its long duration of action.
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, abdominal pain, or heartburn. In rare cases, it may cause gastric ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding. It is contraindicated in patients with a history of active gastric ulcers, severe renal impairment, or hypersensitivity to NSAIDs.
