Indicated for: bacterial urinary tract infections
Route of administration: oral
Substance: nalidixic acid (antibacterial antibiotic)
ATC: J01MB02 (Antiinfectives for systemic use | Quinolone antibacterials | Other quinolones)
Nalidixic acid is an antibiotic from the quinolone class primarily used to treat urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is effective against certain gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Proteus spp., and Klebsiella spp., but it is not active against gram-positive or anaerobic bacteria.
Nalidixic acid works by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis, leading to bacterial destruction. It is typically used for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, but its use has declined in favor of more modern antibiotics due to increased bacterial resistance.
Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, or, in rare cases, neurological reactions such as dizziness or confusion. It is contraindicated in children under 12 years old, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. Patients should strictly follow their doctor’s instructions and complete the treatment to prevent the development of bacterial resistance.
