Bifonazole + urea is a local combination used mainly for fungal nail infection. Urea softens the diseased part of the nail and helps it be removed, while bifonazole is an antifungal medicine acting against the fungus. Treatment is local, but full regrowth of a healthy nail can take months.
The product is applied to the affected nail according to the instructions, often under an occlusive dressing for a defined period. After softening, the affected part is gently scraped without injuring the skin. Protecting the nearby skin and washing hands after application are important. Treatment should continue for as long as the leaflet or doctor advises.
Side effects may include irritation, redness, stinging, peeling, local pain, itching or maceration of the skin around the nail. If the product reaches healthy skin, urea may cause irritation. The nail may become fragile or partly detach, but intense pain or bleeding is not normal.
Contact a doctor if severe inflammation, pus, significant pain or allergy occurs, or if you have diabetes, poor circulation, neuropathy or reduced immunity. These situations increase the risk of foot complications. The diagnosis of fungal nail infection should be confirmed when the appearance is unclear, because psoriasis, trauma and other nail diseases can mimic a fungal infection.
