Latanoprost is an eye medicine that lowers pressure inside the eye in open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It is a prostaglandin analogue that increases drainage of the fluid within the eye. Treatment helps protect the optic nerve and vision, but it cannot restore sight already lost.
Usually one drop is put into the affected eye once daily in the evening. More frequent use can reduce effectiveness. Do not double a missed dose. Wash hands and avoid touching the eye with the bottle tip. Leave at least five minutes between eye medicines; remove contact lenses first and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, following the leaflet.
Redness, stinging, a foreign-body sensation or temporary blurred vision may occur. Eyelashes can become longer and darker, and the iris may gradually turn browner; this colour change can be permanent. Eye inflammation or other reactions requiring assessment sometimes occur.
Seek prompt assessment for eye pain, reduced vision, light sensitivity or worsening irritation. Tell the doctor about ocular herpes, inflammation, recent eye surgery, asthma, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Keep check-ups even without symptoms and do not drive while vision is blurred. Storage conditions and the usable period after opening differ between formulations.
