MIRENA 20mcg / 24h intrauterine device medication leaflet

G02BA03 levonorgestrel • Genito urinary system and sex hormones | Contraceptives for topical use | Intrauterine contraceptives

Levonorgestrel is a synthetic hormone primarily used as an emergency contraceptive or in combined oral contraceptives. It prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and altering the uterine lining.

As an emergency contraceptive, levonorgestrel is taken in tablet form, usually within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse. It is more effective when used as soon as possible after the event.

Side effects may include nausea, fatigue, headaches, irregular bleeding, or breast tenderness. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions may occur.

Levonorgestrel is not recommended as a routine contraceptive method and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Women who are breastfeeding or have certain medical conditions should consult a doctor before use.
