Indicated for: hypertension; benign prostatic hyperplasia
Route of administration: oral
Substance: prazosin (antihypertensive)
ATC: C02CA01 (Cardiovascular system | Antiadrenergic agents, peripherally acting | Alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonists)
Prazosinum is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
It belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-blockers, which work by relaxing blood vessels and smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder.
By lowering blood pressure, prazosinum helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications, such as heart attack or stroke.
The medication also improves urinary flow in patients with BPH, alleviating symptoms such as difficulty urinating or the sensation of incomplete bladder emptying.
Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, headaches, and, in some cases, orthostatic hypotension (a drop in blood pressure upon standing).
It is important for patients to start treatment with a low dose, which can be gradually increased under medical supervision.
Prazosinum is not recommended for patients with a history of severe hypotension or heart failure without prior medical consultation.
Patients should avoid alcohol consumption during treatment, as it may amplify the medication's side effects.
