Indicated for: migraine; pain
Substance: tolfenamic acid (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug)
ATC: M01AG02 (Musculo-skeletal system | Antiinflammatory and antirheumatic products, non-steroids | Fenamates)
Tolfenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) primarily used for the treatment of acute migraines and moderate pain. It works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins, substances involved in inflammation, pain, and fever.
It is effective in relieving migraine-related pain and can also be used for other inflammatory conditions, including muscle and joint pain. Compared to other NSAIDs, tolfenamic acid has similar efficacy but may offer a better tolerability profile for some patients.
It is taken orally and has a rapid absorption, with analgesic effects occurring within an hour. It can be used as an alternative to other NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, especially in patients who have responded well to this compound.
Side effects may include nausea, stomach discomfort, heartburn, dizziness, and, in rare cases, severe allergic reactions or kidney impairment. It is not recommended for patients with a history of severe gastric ulcers, renal failure, or cardiovascular conditions without medical supervision.
