Metamizole sodium, also known as Dipyrone, is a medication used to relieve moderate to severe pain and to reduce fever that does not respond to other treatments. It is an analgesic and antipyretic from the pyrazolone class, with antispasmodic properties, making it useful for treating renal or biliary colic.
Metamizole works by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins, substances involved in inflammation and pain perception. It is available in tablet form, injectable solutions, or suppositories and is used for both short-term treatments and acute situations.
Side effects may include allergic reactions, low blood pressure (especially with injectable forms), and, in rare cases, agranulocytosis (a severe decrease in white blood cells). For this reason, long-term use is discouraged, and it should be taken only as prescribed by a doctor. It is contraindicated during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in patients with hematological disorders.
