Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain and inflammation associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), reducing the production of prostaglandins, substances involved in inflammation, pain, and fever.
Meloxicam is available in tablet, capsule, or injectable forms and is preferred for long-term use due to its lower risk of gastrointestinal side effects compared to other NSAIDs.
Side effects may include nausea, stomach pain, dizziness, diarrhea, or constipation. In rare cases, it can cause gastric ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, or allergic reactions. Long-term use may increase the risk of cardiovascular events. It is important to take the medication as prescribed by a doctor.
