Indicated for: malaria
Route of administration: oral
Substance: primaquine (antimalarial)
ATC: P01BA03 (Antiparasitic products, insecticides and repellents | Antimalarials | Aminoquinolines)
Primaquine is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of malaria, particularly for eliminating the liver stages of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale parasites. It works by destroying parasites that persist in the liver, preventing disease relapses.
The medication is taken orally, usually in tablet form, and should be used as directed by your doctor. Blood tests are important before treatment to check for G6PD deficiency, as this medication can cause hemolysis in affected individuals.
Side effects may include nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, or, in rare cases, hemolytic anemia. In the event of severe reactions, immediate medical intervention is required.
Patients should inform their doctor about any other medications being used or pre-existing conditions to ensure the safe use of primaquine.
