Indicated for: contraception; gynecologic hormonal disorders
Route of administration: oral
Substance: nomegestrol (hormonal contraceptive)
ATC: G03DB04 (Genito urinary system and sex hormones | Progestogens | Pregnadien derivatives)
Nomegestrol is a synthetic progestin primarily used in the treatment of hormonal disorders and as part of combined hormonal contraceptives. It is derived from natural progesterone and has a high affinity for progesterone receptors, making it effective in regulating the menstrual cycle, preventing pregnancy, and treating conditions associated with hormonal imbalances.
Nomegestrol works by mimicking the effects of natural progesterone, inhibiting ovulation, altering cervical mucus to prevent sperm passage, and thinning the endometrium, thereby preventing the implantation of a fertilized egg. It is often used in combination with estrogens, such as estradiol, in combined oral contraceptives, providing a safe and effective method of preventing pregnancy.
While well-tolerated, nomegestrol may cause some side effects. The most common include intermenstrual bleeding, headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, and mood changes. In rare cases, more serious reactions, such as venous thromboembolism or high blood pressure, may occur, especially in women with additional risk factors such as smoking or obesity.
Nomegestrol should be used as directed by a doctor, and the patient should adhere to the prescribed dosing schedule. It is contraindicated in women with a history of venous thromboembolism, severe liver disease, breast cancer, or unexplained vaginal bleeding. Regular medical check-ups are important to monitor for potential side effects and assess overall health.
