Indicated for: bacterial infections
Route of administration: infusion
Substance: linezolid (antibacterial antibiotic)
ATC: J01XX08 (Antiinfectives for systemic use | Other antibacterials)
Linezolid is an antibiotic from the oxazolidinone class, used to treat severe bacterial infections caused by gram-positive resistant bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE). It is indicated for infections such as pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, and other complicated infections.
Linezolid works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, blocking the formation of the translation initiation complex, which halts bacterial growth. It is available in tablet form, oral solution, or injectable solution.
Side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, headache, anemia, thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), or peripheral neuropathy with prolonged use. Linezolid can also interact with foods high in tyramine (such as aged cheeses or red wine) and certain medications, increasing the risk of serotonin syndrome. It is important to take the medication as prescribed by a doctor and for patients to be monitored for side effects.
