Amino acids for parenteral solutions are used in total parenteral nutrition (TPN) to provide essential nutrients when oral or enteral feeding is not possible. They are crucial for protein synthesis, maintaining muscle mass, and supporting metabolic functions.

These amino acids include both essential amino acids (such as leucine, isoleucine, valine, lysine, methionine, threonine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, and histidine) and non-essential amino acids (such as alanine, arginine, glycine, and glutamine). They are administered intravenously, usually in combination with other nutritional components like glucose and lipids.

Parenteral amino acid solutions are indicated in cases of severe malnutrition, liver or kidney failure, postoperative states, or other critical conditions requiring nutritional support. They help maintain nitrogen balance and prevent protein catabolism.

Side effects may include electrolyte imbalances, rare allergic reactions, or metabolic overload, especially in patients with liver or kidney impairment. Close monitoring of liver and kidney function is essential during treatment.

Patients must strictly follow their doctor’s instructions, and the solutions should be administered under strict medical supervision.
