Dibotermin alfa is a recombinant protein used to stimulate bone regeneration in cases of severe bone defects. It is a form of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) that promotes new bone formation by activating mesenchymal stem cells.
It is indicated for the treatment of open tibial fractures and lumbar spinal fusion when autologous bone grafts are not suitable. It is applied locally on an absorbable carrier during surgery.
Common side effects include pain, inflammation, and swelling at the application site. Rarely, allergic reactions or excessive bone formation may occur.
Dibotermin alfa should be used under the supervision of an orthopedic surgeon, and patients should be monitored for bone healing progress.
