Echinacea purpurea, also known as purple coneflower, is a herbal medicine traditionally used to support the body during mild colds and upper respiratory tract infections. Products may contain aerial parts, pressed juice or extracts, and effects can vary considerably between preparations. It does not replace medical care for severe infection or persistent symptoms.
It is usually taken by mouth as tablets, capsules, drops, syrup or tea, according to the leaflet or pharmacist’s advice. Short-term use is most appropriate, often at the first signs of a cold. If fever, cough, sore throat, breathing symptoms or poor general condition persist or worsen, medical assessment is needed rather than continuing self-treatment.
