Haloperidol works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, helping to reduce symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. It is also effective in reducing severe nausea and vomiting, particularly in the context of cancer treatments.
Side effects may include drowsiness, muscle stiffness, tremors, dizziness, or an increased risk of extrapyramidal symptoms (involuntary movements). In rare cases, it can cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a serious condition. It is important for the medication to be administered under strict medical supervision.
