Glucose + sodium chloride + potassium chloride is a basic combination for oral rehydration solutions used to replace water and electrolytes lost through diarrhoea, vomiting or heavy sweating. Glucose helps the intestine absorb sodium and water, while potassium helps replace losses from stools. The aim is to prevent or correct dehydration.
It must be dissolved in the exact amount of water stated on the sachet or leaflet. Do not make it more concentrated and do not add sugar, salt or juice, because electrolyte balance can be altered. The solution is taken in small, frequent sips, especially when nausea is present. In children, older adults and frail people, dehydration can become dangerous quickly.
Side effects are uncommon when the product is prepared correctly, but nausea, vomiting or abdominal discomfort may occur. Incorrect preparation can lead to too much sodium or potassium, especially in patients with kidney disease, heart failure or medicines that increase potassium. The solution does not directly stop diarrhoea; it prevents complications of fluid loss.
Seek urgent medical help if drowsiness, intense thirst, very dry mouth, no urination, blood in the stool, high fever, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea in an infant or confusion occurs. In diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease or a salt-restricted diet, use should be discussed with a doctor. The water used must be safe to drink.
