Glucose is a sugar the body uses for energy. Oral preparations can rapidly correct hypoglycaemia, meaning low blood sugar. Intravenous solutions have different purposes depending on concentration: treating severe hypoglycaemia, supplying water and calories or diluting certain medicines. They are not interchangeable and are not an all-purpose infusion for tiredness.
Oral glucose is given only to a conscious person who can swallow, following their hypoglycaemia plan and checking blood sugar afterwards. Give nothing by mouth to an unconscious person or someone unable to swallow: seek emergency help. Intravenous treatment is administered by healthcare staff at a calculated dose and rate.
Excess administration can cause high blood sugar, fluid overload and electrolyte changes, including low sodium. Concentrated solutions can irritate veins and damage tissue if they leak outside the vein. Monitoring is particularly important in diabetes, kidney disease or heart failure.
Immediately report pain, burning or swelling at the infusion site, shortness of breath, confusion, intense thirst or excessive urination. If hypoglycaemia does not resolve or returns, its cause and the diabetes treatment need assessment. Do not change insulin yourself or use an injectable solution by a route other than the one specified.
