Dexamethasone + framycetin is a local combination usually used as eye or ear drops when inflammation is associated with a susceptible bacterial infection. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that reduces redness, swelling and itching, while framycetin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic active against certain bacteria. It should be used only for the condition for which it was prescribed.

Use the medicine exactly as directed and only in the area indicated by the doctor. Wash your hands before administration and avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye, ear or skin to prevent contamination. Do not extend treatment without medical review, because corticosteroids may hide worsening infection or encourage other infections.

Possible side effects include stinging, local irritation, temporary blurred vision, itching, dryness or allergic reactions. In the eye, prolonged corticosteroid use may increase intraocular pressure and the risk of cataract. In the ear, aminoglycosides require caution, especially if the eardrum is perforated, because there may be a risk to hearing.

Contact a doctor if pain, discharge, redness or vision does not improve quickly, or if hearing loss, severe dizziness, rash, facial swelling or breathing difficulty occurs. Do not use it for viral or fungal infections unless the doctor clearly instructs you to do so. Contact lenses should generally be avoided during eye treatment unless the doctor advises otherwise.
