Indicated for: gout; hyperuricemia
Route of administration: oral
Substance: febuxostat (xanthine oxidase inhibitor)
ATC: M04AA03 (Musculo-skeletal system | Antigout preparations | Preparations inhibiting uric acid production)
Febuxostat is a selective xanthine oxidase inhibitor used for the treatment of chronic hyperuricemia in patients with gout. It works by reducing the production of uric acid, thereby preventing the formation of urate crystals.
The medication is taken orally, usually once daily, as directed by a doctor. It is important to monitor uric acid levels and renal function during treatment.
Side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, headache, or skin rashes. In rare cases, severe reactions such as liver failure or serious allergic reactions may occur.
Febuxostat is not recommended for patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or severe hepatic impairment.
