Retinol + tocopherol is a combination of vitamin A and vitamin E. It may be used as a supplement when intake is insufficient or deficiency risk is present, according to advice from a doctor or pharmacist. Vitamin A contributes to vision, skin and mucous membranes, while vitamin E has antioxidant activity and helps protect cells from oxidative damage.
It is taken by mouth, usually with food, because both vitamins are fat-soluble and are absorbed better in the presence of dietary fat. Check whether you also take multivitamins, skin products, fish liver oil or retinoid medicines. Combining sources can lead to excessive intake, particularly of vitamin A, even when each individual product seems harmless.
Side effects may include nausea, abdominal discomfort, unpleasant taste, diarrhoea or rash. Excess vitamin A can cause headache, blurred vision, dry skin, hair loss, liver injury and fetal harm. High doses of vitamin E may increase bleeding risk, especially in patients taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines.
Ask for medical advice before use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver disease, bleeding disorders, treatment with warfarin, aspirin or clopidogrel, or before surgery. Stop use and contact a doctor if unusual bruising, bleeding, jaundice, intense headache or allergic reactions occur. Supplements are helpful only when the dose and reason for use are appropriate.
