Grape seed extract is a herbal product rich in proanthocyanidins and other antioxidant compounds. It is used as a supplement to support blood-vessel health, peripheral circulation or antioxidant intake, although clinical benefit depends on dose, preparation and patient condition. It should not be considered a treatment for cardiovascular disease.
It is taken by mouth according to the leaflet, usually as capsules or tablets. Products should be chosen carefully because extract concentration can vary between brands. It does not replace prescribed treatments for high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, venous disease or other conditions. Lifestyle measures and medical treatment remain essential when disease is present.
Side effects may include nausea, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, itching or rash. Grape seed extract may affect bleeding in some people and should be used cautiously with anticoagulants, antiplatelet medicines, anti-inflammatory drugs or before surgery. Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well established.
Ask a doctor before use if you take warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, anti-inflammatory medicines or blood-pressure treatments, or if you have a bleeding disorder. Stop the product and seek medical advice if unusual bruising, bleeding, allergic reactions, severe dizziness or persistent abdominal pain occur. The supplement may complement the diet, but it does not replace medical evaluation.
