Sodium fluoride is a compound commonly used to prevent dental cavities. It is found in toothpastes, mouthwashes, or as tablets and helps strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. Regular use of sodium fluoride reduces the risk of cavities, especially in children and adolescents.
Sodium fluoride is applied locally by brushing or rinsing, or is administered as supplements, as recommended by the dentist. It is important not to exceed the recommended dose, as excess fluoride can lead to dental fluorosis, which appears as white spots on the teeth.
Side effects are rare when the recommended doses are followed. In case of accidental ingestion of a large amount, nausea, abdominal pain, or other digestive symptoms may occur. In such cases, immediate medical attention is necessary.
Sodium fluoride is effective in preventing cavities, but its use should be supervised, especially in children, to avoid the risk of overdose and to ensure optimal oral health.
