Bisacodyl is a laxative used to treat acute constipation or to prepare the bowel before medical procedures such as colonoscopy. It works by stimulating intestinal peristalsis and increasing water and electrolyte secretion in the colon, facilitating stool evacuation.

It is available in the form of oral tablets, suppositories, or rectal solutions. The effect typically occurs within 6-12 hours after oral administration and within 15-60 minutes after rectal administration.

Side effects may include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, or rectal irritation (with suppositories). Long-term use is discouraged as it may lead to dependency, electrolyte imbalances, or impaired normal bowel function.

Bisacodyl is contraindicated in cases of intestinal obstruction, appendicitis, unexplained abdominal pain, or severe dehydration. It is important to use it as directed by a doctor or the product leaflet.
