Donepezil is a medication used for the symptomatic treatment of mild to severe dementia associated with Alzheimer’s disease. It belongs to the class of cholinesterase inhibitors and works by increasing the levels of acetylcholine in the brain, a neurotransmitter important for memory, learning, and other cognitive functions.
Donepezil can help improve memory, attention, and the ability to perform daily activities, but it does not cure Alzheimer’s disease or stop its progression. It is taken in tablet form, usually once daily, before bedtime.
Side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, muscle cramps, dizziness, or fatigue. In rare cases, it may cause bradycardia (slow heart rate) or severe allergic reactions.
