Domperidone is a medication used to treat nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort caused by delayed stomach emptying (gastroparesis). It is also used to relieve symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux and bloating.
Domperidone works by blocking dopamine receptors in the area of the brain responsible for nausea and vomiting. It also stimulates the motility of the upper gastrointestinal tract, helping the stomach empty more quickly and reducing the sensation of nausea.
Side effects may include dry mouth, headaches, dizziness, or, in rare cases, heart rhythm disturbances. Long-term use or high doses may increase the risk of cardiovascular side effects, especially in patients with pre-existing heart conditions.
