Dihydrocodeine is an opioid medication used to treat moderate to severe pain, especially when other analgesics, such as paracetamol or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are insufficient. It can also be used to treat severe cough due to its antitussive effect.
Dihydrocodeine works by binding to opioid receptors in the central nervous system, reducing the perception of pain and the response to it. It is available in tablet, capsule, or oral solution form, and its analgesic effect typically lasts between 4 and 6 hours.
Side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, nausea, dry mouth, or, in rare cases, allergic reactions. Long-term use can lead to physical and psychological dependence, so the medication should be taken as prescribed by a doctor. Patients should avoid alcohol consumption or driving while on this medication, as dihydrocodeine can impair alertness.
