Indicated for: epilepsy; bipolar disorder
Substance: valproic acid + salts (antiepileptics)
ATC: N03AG01 (Nervous system | Antiepileptics | Fatty acid derivatives)
Valproic acid and its salts (e.g., sodium valproate) are used to treat epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and prevent migraines. They stabilize brain electrical activity, preventing seizures and episodes of mania or depression.
Valproic acid increases GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) levels, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, reducing neuronal excitability. It is indicated for generalized and focal epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and migraine prevention.
Side effects may include nausea, drowsiness, weight gain, or tremor. Rarely, it can affect the liver or pancreas. It is contraindicated during pregnancy due to the risk of congenital malformations. Treatment must be monitored by a doctor.
