Hexylresorcinol + benzalkonium chloride is a local combination for relief of sore throat and throat inflammation. Hexylresorcinol has local anaesthetic and mild antiseptic effects, while benzalkonium chloride is an antiseptic. Lozenges ease discomfort but do not replace treatment of an infection needing medical assessment.
Allow each lozenge to dissolve slowly in the mouth, following the leaflet; do not chew or swallow it whole. Observe the maximum daily number and minimum age, which depend on the product. Lozenges are unsuitable for children unable to suck them safely. Treatment is intended for short-lived symptoms rather than prolonged use.
Local irritation or inflammation of the mouth and throat may occur. Allergic reactions to active ingredients, flavourings or colourings are possible. Stop use if symptoms worsen after a dose. Some lozenges contain sugar, which matters in diabetes and certain inherited sugar intolerances. Excessive doses can cause digestive upset.
Ask for medical advice if pain persists, becomes severe or occurs with high fever or substantial swallowing difficulty. Breathing difficulty or swelling of the tongue or face requires urgent help. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, use only after medical advice. Do not prolong treatment to postpone investigation of persistent symptoms.
