Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet medication used to prevent blood clots (thrombosis) in cardiovascular conditions. It is particularly indicated for patients at high risk of thrombotic events, such as myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, or peripheral arterial disease. It is also used after procedures like coronary angioplasty or stent implantation to prevent stent occlusion.

Clopidogrel works by inhibiting platelet aggregation, blocking P2Y12 receptors on the surface of platelets. This mechanism prevents platelets from sticking together, reducing the risk of blood clot formation.

The medication is taken orally, usually once daily, and the dosage is determined by the doctor based on the condition being treated. It is important for patients to take clopidogrel as prescribed and not to stop the treatment without medical advice, as this may increase the risk of thrombotic events.

Common side effects include bleeding (e.g., gums, nose, or gastrointestinal tract), bruising, and gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea or abdominal pain. Rarely, allergic reactions or a serious condition called thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) may occur.

Patients should inform their doctor about other medications they are taking, as clopidogrel can interact with certain treatments, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or anticoagulants, increasing the risk of bleeding.
